ILO Community of Practice

Kenya's growing digital economy has led to the rise of gig and platform work, offering new opportunities but also exposing workers to challenges such as lack of social protections, unclear worker classifications and fragmented labor advocacy. In response, the International Labour Organization (ILO), through its PROSPECTS project, organized a peer-learning workshop in Naivasha, Kenya, from December 3–5, 2024. This workshop aimed to empower gig and platform workers by equipping peer-learning facilitators and worker advocates with insights into legal and regulatory frameworks, strategies for collective action and tools to promote decent work and safeguard labor rights in the platform economy. Participants will also review peer-learning materials to ensure they are practical and impactful for future worker education.

The workshop brought together 35 representatives from trade unions, workers’ organizations and mutual aid advocates, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration. It focused on enabling participants to cascade their learnings within their networks, thereby broadening the reach of worker education and advocacy efforts. By addressing the challenges of gig and platform work through social dialogue, collective action and innovative solutions, the initiative seeks to promote equitable benefits from the digital economy while advancing workers' rights and protections in line with international labor standards.
